What should been done if I suspect a Gas appliance is unsafe?

First of all it is illegal to use a gas appliance if its deemed to be unsafe. Turn the gas appliance off and do not touch it until a Gas Safe Registered Engineer has checked it. If you do suspect there is a gas leak you should do the following immediately:

  • Shut off the gas supply at the meter control valve (if you know where it is)
  • Open all the doors and windows
  • Call National Grid’s Gas Emergency Free phone number: 0800 111 999
Why should I use a Gas Safe Registered Engineer?

Anyone who is employed to work with gas appliances in a domestic property must be a Gas Safe Registered Engineer and proficient in the area of gas work. You can be assured that any work completed by a Gas Safe Registered Engineer will be done competently and safely.
We advise you to arrange an annual safety check and regular maintenance to be carried out on your gas appliances and installation by a Gas Safe Registered Engineer. Landlords have a legal duty to ensure all of the above is carried out.

How do I know if an engineer is Gas Safe Registered?

All Gas Safe Registered engineers carry ID cards which tell you which appliances they are qualified to work on.

Should I always follow the advice of a Gas Safe Registered engineer?

If your engineer recommends that more work needs to be done on your appliance always follow the advice given. If you have doubts over the advice follow it in the interim period and contact Gas Safe Register for further advice.

Does HSE recommend the use of carbon monoxide alarms?

The use of CO alarms are strongly recommended by HSE as they are a useful precaution to give advance warning of CO in the property. These alarms should not be regarded as a replacement for regular maintenance and safety checks by a Gas Safe Registered Engineer. You can purchase CO alarms for around £20 to £30 in most hardware shops. Before you purchase a CO alarm always make sure it complies with British Standard EN 50291 and carries a British or European approval mark, such as a Kite mark. CO alarms should be maintained and installed in line with the manufacturer’s instructions.

Why are ventilation and flues so important?

All gas appliances need the following to be operated safely:

  • An adequate supply of air to help the complete combustion of gas;
  • efficient operation of their flue to remove any combustion products, including carbon monoxide (CO), that are produced

Dangerous levels of carbon monoxide can build up the possibility of fatal consequences without these safety precautions. Here are some easy ways of avoiding the buildup of carbon monoxide poisoning:

  • Ensure that flues are kept clear at all times;
  • Never block ventilation;
  • Get your appliance regularly maintained and annually serviced by a Gas Safe Registered engineer.

I was wary initially of calling out a plumber I didn't know, but my fears were allayed when Mark arrived to sort out our boiler problem. He was friendly, professional, clear on prices and charged what he said he would, clearing up behind himself as he went. I would highly recommend Mark Cameron Heating & Boiler Repair and he is now definitely my go-to boiler repair man.
